Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach high school in Chicago, and I am also in charge of our Global Connections program. I have a group of exceptional students who want to take what they have learned in the classroom and use it! My students are all bright and hard working, but more importantly they are passionate about learning.
I am organizing a trip for 12 of our students to spend one week learning, traveling and living in the Czech Republic.
For many of them it is a once in a lifetime opportunity, many of them have never left the state. This is a student exchange trip and the students are eager to learn about the amazing capital city that will be their home. The cost of a trip like this is significant. The students, parents, and community are working hard to raise funds to help subsidize the cost of the trip but, we need more help. All of the travelers are dedicated to global and cultural studies and have taken honors and advanced classes. They have also enrolled an extra seminar that focuses on Czech culture, history, language, cuisine, music, politics and much, much more in order to better prepare for their time in Prague. They want to be as prepared as possible when they visit their sister city of Prague and they are equally excited to share the great city of Chicago with their Czech counterparts.
My Project
I would love for my students to have books about Prague to help them to better understand the culture, community, and families that they will be living in and with. Additionally, I would love to present our Czech guests with books that highlight the history and beauty of our city, Chicago, to enrich our students knowledge on both sides of the globe. These materials will help both sets of teachers develop a strong, meaningful and sustainable student exchange between our sister cities. We could use both tests to help guide blog and video conference dialogs and well as inspire individual student investigation. My hope is that students will use these books as tools to create connections between their peers abroad based on their own interests and knowledge. However, the extra cost of the books adds to the daunting total we are trying to raise.
Your help will not only help my students learn more about the city they are traveling to, but show them that what they are doing is important not just in their minds, but to others as well.
They would be so excited to see that someone out there cares enough to help them reach for the stars. It will also show them that they their efforts to fundraiser can come true. Your donation will continue their goal of educating their own community about the world outside their neighborhood or city.
