My Students

Do you know 30 second graders who learn math all the same way? Of course not!

At our inner-city elementary school 96% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, 70% are Latino and 21% are African American.

We have an extended day and year so our scholars are in school 40% more than traditional public schools which, along with a lot of hard work, allows them to climb the mountain to college and close the achievement gap. We have an academically rigorous, values-based curriculum that empowers all of our students with the skills and knowledge to be the change they wish to see in the world.

My Project

Differentiated, small group instruction plays an essential role in developing critical thinkers. However, as a teacher I refuse to give my scholars rote worksheets to keep them busy while I provide targeted instruction to others. Meaningful and fun math centers will allow me to teach small groups AND empower the other scholars to continue their learning independently. Specifically, these math centers increase problem-solving skills, one of the most difficult and complex skills necessary for young scholars to be successful in school and life. These centers all have self-checking abilities which provide instant feedback to scholars. Engaging math centers will benefit the class in two ways: each scholar will benefit from the centers when they use them directly; additionally, all scholars will benefit from the centers when they receive the more focused lessons that I am able to give in small groups, because the other scholars are captivated in purposeful learning using the centers.

Problem solving math centers empower scholars to continue learning independently while I provide the targeted instruction our scholars need.

Time is precious, especially when many of our students are behind their more privileged peers, and meaningful and engaging centers maximize learning time in the classroom so they are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in classroom and beyond.
