City Design

My students need brushes...lots of brushes! The city will be painted. They also need glue to construct the buildings and paper for drafting their plans.

My Students

Many kids sit in front of their computers all day long. Some of them even build virtual cities. What about allowing them to take those ideas into the classroom? Imagine what the outcome would be.

My students are hard-working high school kids with a desire to do more than memorize facts.

They want a hands-on experience which is exactly what this project will give them. Many of them don't get the change to take an art course but for those that do, they know that it is a change from the academic rigor they face elsewhere.

My Project

City by Design was started by the National Gallery in Washington D.C. They have several teacher resources that tie into eduction and specifically the arts. I will be using their overall plan to build a city. The students will work in groups to form communities that include industry, commercial, residential and more. Once they have completed their design, they will construct their city out of recycled materials and display it at our art show. The brushes we've requested are an absolute necessity and any art teacher will tell you that they go through them like crazy. The glue will be for the overall construction of the project. The rulers will help them design their project like real city architects!

Give students a chance to think outside the box!

Give them the chance to work in a team and create something amazing. The final product will be showcased at our Night of the Arts and hopefully at our district office to allow them to see what we're working on in the classroom. Thank you!
