We *Really* Need These Fantastic Atlases!

My students need a class set of high-quality atlases full of special purpose maps that colorfully bring to life the concepts and events of our country's history!

My Students

We're all familiar with the expression, "a picture is worth a thousand words." A great map is worth all that and more. Right now I have just enough copies of a special atlas to have my own group of fifth graders share and to give one copy each to my fifth grade colleagues to use with their classes.

My fifth grade students have become avid map readers and have learned how to make the most of whatever maps and atlases we can get our hands on to enhance our learning experiences.

A few years ago, I combed through supply rooms and storage closets in my school looking for copies of NYSTROM's Atlas of Our Country's History. I found just enough copies that I can have my students share a copy, have a copy for my own planning and to give a copy to my grade level colleagues. We simply doesn't have the funds right now to buy a complete class set and the support materials to maximize the usefulness of these atlases. Most of the kids in my school have never traveled farther away from our city than a couple of hundred miles away unless it has been a trip back to their native country. While an atlas can't substitute for the real-life experiences that travel brings, map and atlas reading skills can help foster a lifelong curiosity about the world and an understanding of our place in it.

My Project

When I first saw the NYSTROM Atlas of Our Country's History, I wanted the whole school to have copies for all the upper grade kids! The maps and the information that accompanies them are colorful and vibrant. The students use the few copies that we already have to enhance their understanding of our social studies curriculum. The information on each page is interesting and inspires the kids to do further research. Through these atlases, with their maps that follow the progress of US history from before the arrival of Europeans to the most recent events that have shaped our history, the children can more easily develop a sense of time and place. With a class set of these atlases, we will be able to extend our use of this resource beyond the classroom. The students will be able to take a copy home to use in doing homework, in working on research projects, and simply to enjoy reading for the pleasure of learning more about the history and geography of the United States.

Because this project includes 30 student copies of the atlas, this is a valuable resource that will be shared between classes and used by future students for many years to come.

I am currently using 8 copies of an edition of this atlas that was published over ten years ago. Despite the time that has passed since their publication, these atlases are by no means obsolete. An investment in these newer editions is sound. They will remain relevant for years to come for hundreds of students.
