Getting students to think scientifically and to comprehend what they read is one of the best things a teacher can do! Combining reading and science is one of my preferred ways to get the job done. Science-A Closer Look is a fabulous book full of great text, wonderful charts and colorful pictures!
My students are a very diverse group of 27 sixth graders-13 girls and 14 boys.
They come from many different cultures and backgrounds. These students are curious about how things work and want to learn more about science. Our school has 50% of our students in the free/reduced lunch program and is a title-one school. Despite this, our school scores have continued to improve and this past year we exceeded all our expectations! Our school is a wonderful place to be a student, parent or teacher! One of the reasons we succeed is because we look for ways to improve. This book will help us in two areas-non-fiction reading comprehension and understanding the world around us.
My Project
My students need 4 copies of Science: A Closer Look, to advance their science knowledge and improve their literacy! This book is a high quality resource for teaching science and reading skills. The four copies will allow me to read with a small guided reading group to support literacy skills. There are also many hands-on labs that help introduce or reinforce science concepts. Doing the labs gives even reluctant readers an authentic reason to read carefully as they do the lab activities and experiments. Our ultimate hope is to have a classroom set so that each student can have a copy in their hands and we can use this book with all students.
Integrating subjects is essential in order to teach our children and develop world-class skills in all students.
The Science: A Closer Look books will inspire my students to be better readers, thinkers, and scientists. My students will leave our sixth grade elementary more prepared for their middle school and high school science courses. My hope is that they will develop a love for science and carry this into a career in their future. Thank you for giving my students these wonderful books!
