I Don't Know That Word, Do You?

My students need a Nook tablet to have an equal opportunity to learn new concepts and vocabulary in order to develop skills needed to find academic success.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you heard a word or remember learning how to listen? Me neither! Students with who are deaf might be able to use hearing aids or a cochlear implant, but those devices don't include an instant vocabulary app.

My student is in the 3rd grade, but this is only her second year in a public school.

Why? Because she spent preschool through 1st grade at a school specializing in teaching children who are deaf how to use hearing aids and/or cochlear implants to hear and to develop a speaking voice. She went from being in a class of six to being in a class of 23. Not only that, but now she's surrounded with a constant barrage of spoken and written vocabulary that she does not know. She works hard and is making progress. Unfortunately, even progress she's made isn't enough to close the gap between her prior knowledge and vocabulary and that of her peers.

My Project

What is the key to her learning success? Visuals! The more visual I can make a concept, the better she is able to understand it. For example, I can say the word "whale" and she can repeat the word back to me, but still has no idea what "whale" is. If I say the word, show that it looks like in print, and provide a picture, suddenly "whale" contains meaning. Wow! Can you imagine trying to guess what words she might or might not know and prepare visuals in advance? I've tried- it doesn't work. Instead, I've found success looking up pictures using the Internet to define unknown words as they come up. However, I'm not always there to do that for her. If I can provide my student with a NOOK tablet, she could begin to look up definitions and pictures of unknown words on her own (increasing independence and knowledge!). She would be able to use apps designed to build vocabulary and academic skills. She could create her own picture dictionary for each subject area.

Providing a NOOK tablet will increase my student's independence and knowledge. An entire world of vocabulary words will open up for her. Just a few examples of words she didn't know coming into 2nd grade are bride, fingernail, and planet. Please consider helping this student to build a stronger vocabulary and self-confidence. Remember, if you give a man a fish he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.
