It is crucial as a 7th grade teacher that I keep all students' attention. Varied learning styles challenge me to ensure that the material is presented in a fun and engaging way. Interactive material can keep students engaged and ensure that visual learners stay as focused as their auditory peers.
I taught my 7th grade science and math students last year as 6th graders, so this is a group of students I have gotten to know quite well.
They are a very inquisitive bunch, and often have questions about the material that go beyond the scope of the curriculum. Frequently I find myself turning to my computer to find answers. With an LCD projector, I could encourage their curiosity and teach them how to decipher information that comes up through a web search by doing that research together as a class.
My students are incredibly tech savvy in some areas, but sometimes lacking in their ability to use technology for their studies. They are very well-versed in social media, but they have trouble with online educational resources like those posted by textbook publishers. An LCD projector would allow us to use the Internet as an educational resource, which will improve their knowledge of technology by allowing the whole class to navigate through these websites and learning tools together.
My Project
There are so many teaching materials that are inaccessible for use in the classroom without an LCD projector. I would like to make PowerPoint presentations for my science lessons, use online Math and Science review games for test preparation, and make use of the many online videos that come directly from the students' science textbooks and are only available online. I have a laptop and Internet access in the classroom, but without an LCD projector it is not possible to use these resources together as a class.
Ideally, in the future, I'd like to have access to some other resources that can be paired with the LCD projector. For example, there are microscopes that can be used along with an LCD projector. Also, a document camera would be very useful so that students can display their own work.
An LCD projector will enhance the classroom experience for my 7th graders by allowing me to incorporate more resources into lessons.
A projector will help them learn how to use resources available to them I throughout their education. Someday I'd love to display the textbook and student work, have a microscope that can be paired with the projector, and create highly interactive lesson plans. A projector is the first step in making the wealth of available technology accessible to my students
