Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Emails, sharing photos, throwing together a PowerPoint...these are skills many of us take for granted. For my students who do not have computers and digital cameras at home, these are mysterious high tech skills. Let's endow them with real tools to learn these basic tech survival skills.

My students are highly intelligent, talented youth who face significant life challenges with a smile.

I've taught in private schools and it's abundantly clear that the only difference between my current group at a high poverty public school and those from wealthier families is circumstance. My students are resourceful, gracious and good at sharing, full of laughter, creative, and excited to learn about the world outside of our town. About 80% of my students receive free/reduced lunch, many students are the children of migrant laborers. Most speak Spanish at home and English at school, which adds challenge and richness to their education. They have high ambitions and want to go to college to take advantage of the opportunities their parents haven't had access to. Many of our basic needs aren't met. Chairs, maintenance, and roof repairs go untended, yet students are expected to meet the demands of the 21st century. If we can't fix the buildings, let's give them useful life skills.

My Project

We are requesting two digital cameras and memory cards for Art classes. Students use cameras to take photos of their artwork then they edit and share their work using our school's computer lab. This teaches them to interact with technology in a personal and meaningful way which imparts real academic and life skills appropriate to the 21st century. Since the majority of my students do not have computers in the home, and even fewer are connected to the Internet at home, school is where they must learn to use email, PowerPoint, word processing, and other programs. By making art, learning basic lighting, staging, and editing skills, students will be able to make and email their digital portfolios. This prepares them for portfolio-based exams and competitions like AP Studio Art, college applications, and class projects, not to mention professional applications later on. This is a fun way for a lot of students to engage with technology to learn basic skills.

Students from high-poverty communities deserve the same exact resources that wealthier kids get.

In our case this means our school needs to supply technology because many of our families can't. The second big impact is one of morale. Students routinely look at the school's peeling paint and quick fixes and ask why no one takes care of them. New resources in the classroom shows student that someone out there cares about them enough to help them engage with the world through useful technology.
