My Students

My students don't really need to watch their language, but I would love for them to watch their language skills grow!

Because this area is so isolated and very low income, many children come into our school system with low language skills - not because they aren't smart, but because they just simply haven't had the exposure to things that many people take for granted.

Many of my students have never been bowling or to a movie theater, many have no books at home, most have never been on vacation or stayed in a hotel, some do not have televisions or family vehicles. So... where can we turn to build vocabulary and teach experiences that many have never had? BOOKS!

My Project

My students love hearing books read to them. They are at the age where they're not afraid or embarrassed to be creative. Listening to books on CD and playing with puppets are great ways to develop language, vocabulary, speaking, and articulation skills.

With this project, that shy student who doesn't like to talk much in class will put on a puppet show with a partner when it's just the two of them during center time, exchanging ideas and communicating through language.

That child whose parent never reads to them at home will be exposed to a variety of books, vocabulary and concepts during listening center. Giving to this project will help develop lifelong language skills in my students.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
