What Could Be Better Than Cool?

My students need a class set of thesauruses to assist us in becoming writers with a colorful vocabulary.

My Students

"It was cool. I had fun." This is what I read day after day from my students, who want to find a better word for cool or fun, but don't have the vocabulary to do so.

We are a Title I school, with students that come from single income households.

Many students live with grandparents, who struggle to help them with homework. These same grandparents were poor students themselves, and don't have the skills needed to help their student become a better writer. Our students have very limited vocabularies, as television is their primary entertainment.

My Project

My school firmly believes that writing should take the same priority as math and reading, which get the spotlight because of state testing. However, we have realized that our poor writers are also low readers, and we need to fix both problems at the same time. With limited access to technology, our students need books that they can lay hands on as needed. A class set of thesauruses would allow us to lead children in activities that grow their vocabulary. Using great words in our writing will help us recognize those same words as we read. Student confidence grows when they know they can be better writers, mainly by having access to the same tools that writers’ have.

These thesauruses will allow the students to take control of their own writing and in turn, their own learning.

They'll have the confidence they need to grow in their writing, knowing that they have a handy tool to help them reach their goals.
