Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I remember what school was like when my children went to school for the first time. It was all captured on video or pictures. I would like to have this opportunity to capture these important memories for my students. Unfortunately, some of my students do not have the opportunity to do so.

I am a kindergarten teacher with 25 students in my classroom.

These students are a group of wonderful, enthusiastic learners. 80% of my students are on free or reduced lunch. Our school is a Title I school. My parents are great parents. They are very supportive and work very hard to provide the best education for their children. However, when I ask my students to bring a picture of themselves, their animal etc. to share, some of them are unable to provide pictures for different reasons.

My Project

Our kindergarten classroom is a busy place to be. I have always tried to create memories for the students using my own camera. However, my camera is not working any more. By having a new digital camera for the classroom, I will continue to capture important achievements and milestones of all the students. For the last two years, I was able to make a slide show of all the activities we did in the classroom. I presented the video during Open House and it was a hit with the parents and the students. I gave each family a copy to keep. My Kindergarten colleague and I will use the camera to capture special projects the students work on in class, special events, and field trips. These photos will be used to create the students' own kindergarten monthly memory books. Moreover, the photos we take will be used to help children write about objects or experiences they had. Young children need visual pictures to help them describe or write about what they see.

These early years are a very special time in a child's life.

As a teacher, I have the ability and opportunity to provide the students with pictures and videos of these important experiences in their lives. This will be important for the children and their families. By having a new good camera and a new printer, that I received last month thanks to Donors Choose, I will be able to continue to capture these memories for these students and many more students to come.
