My Students

Keep our students healthy! Encourage them to wash their hands after they "see" how many germs live on their little fingers!

I am teaching first grade in a medium-need community in North Carolina.

There are four first grade classrooms and our team is very strong. Each first grade teacher has an area of strength that we share to plan and teach the best possible instruction to all of our students. My specific area is biology.

My Project

Students throughout our school have missed school and much needed instruction due to the flu virus or other illnesses due to a variety of germs. Keeping their hands clean can prevent them from being sick. At this age, students need to SEE that germs exist everywhere, especially on dirty hands and that washing their hands regularly can keep those germs at bay. This simple experiment will allow students to see how dirty their hands may be and analyze how hand washing can get rid of most of them. Children can make a thumbprint in prepared Media plates first with dirty hands and then after they washed their hands with soap and warm water. After a couple days, germs will form small dots in the medium that can be seen with the naked eye. The more germs on a finger, the more dots! This experiment gives visual proof that there are germs on our hands all the time.

Without hand washing, our dirty hands carry millions of germs, some of which making us sick.

After washing our hands, there are less germs, therefore less chances of getting sick. Your help will ensure that our students learn how important it is to wash hands with soap and water on a regular basis, a life-long skill that will help them live a healthy life.
