This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Access to technology should not be a luxury because it truly is a necessity. Unfortunately many of my students do not have this type of access due to financial constraints. Students need to be able to work with the latest technology to actively participate in an ever increasing digital world.

My students are eager young learners.

This particular class is quite active and are truly digital age children. They are captivated and motivated by technology. My class is made up of all English learners. They need continued development in English language acquisition. Only 2% of this particular class is on grade-level or above in reading. Only 20% of my students own a computer. The school is located in a predominantly Latino, inner city area. The school is located between three major freeways and there is an extremely high traffic pattern. In fact, there have been five fatalities involving our students due to the numerous families that walk to and from school with their children. There is a lot of graffiti and there are two federal housing projects less than a mile away. In spite of the many challenges facing this community, families have faith that a good education will provide the students with the opportunity to participate fully in society.

My Project

The Galaxy Tablet will enhance student learning in a variety of ways. My students will be able to access information by conducting research to expand on concepts taught in school and to follow up on interest fueled by their curiosity. Students will be able to use this product to read e-books and to respond to literature.They will also be able to create projects and presentations that are engaging to themselves as well as their classmates. Technology such as the Galaxy tablet extends students' learning to the world wide web and brings home the idea that we are all interconnected and part of a larger world.

My project is important because it will provide resources to students that have limited exposure to this type of technology.

In addition, it will increase equity, in terms of somewhat leveling the playing field. Simply stated my students will have access to the technology readily available and abundant in more affluent schools.
