My students need a variety of puppets, including finger puppets, and a puppet theater to be able to elicit language, have social peer level interactions, and gain retelling skills that will lead to greater comprehension.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember how fun preschool can be where you played the day away while learning and you didn't even know you would be acquiring skills that would last a lifetime. My students all have language and speech delays. My students face the challenge of not being able to express their thoughts and ideas.

My students are special education preschoolers in a preschool mix class.

They have a wide range of disabilities and range in age from 3-5. My students have significant delays in the area of verbal expression which impacts their ability use language, retell stories and social interactions. The children come to school as they turn three which can be at any point during the school year although they must have an IEP. All of my students have deficits in language, come from low income homes, and are second language learners, as we are a Title I school. My students have significant delays in expressive and receptive language and comprehension skills which impact their social skills. My students struggle to develop pre- reading skills needed to transition to a general education kindergarten. Many of my students do not have educational or enriching learning toys at their homes. Dramatic play will enhance their their language, comprehension, social skills while they learn.

My Project

My class would utilize a puppet theater by being able to access not only daily life skills, but the core preschool curriculum. The children will access the different themes and learn to retell stories based on the curriculum as well as make believe. I can incorporate the DRDP-A standards such as retelling stories, make believe, using language to share with others. The children will engage with their peers and be able to use the puppets to set the stage in a fun play based atmosphere. The puppets will correlate with stories, themes and songs that are curriculum based and familiar to the child. The students will be able to use the puppet theater to enrich language and social interactions as they learn story retelling and they can do it all by themselves. The preschool mix class is a language based environment and the puppet will give my second language learners a chance to enrich their vocabulary. The children will use the puppets as manipulatives and visual aides to access the curriculum

My students all have challenges before they even are in kindergarten.

They face the challenge of not being able to express their needs let alone thoughts and ideas. The verbal communication impacts their social interactions and they become frustrated; no one understands them. The children's language delays impact their ability to retell personal data and stories. When the ability to retell is delayed the children can not transfer needs, wants, or develop pre reading skills.
