Invisible Students Read Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man

My students need to be able to read books that they can relate to. They need 20 copies of "The Invisible Man."

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember how hard high school was, socially and academically? My students come from all over the world. Many speak no English when they arrive and they are marginalized by other students, and even by some of their own teachers. They spend hours each day alone, marginalized...invisible.

As an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher, most of my students are not American but they strongly believe in the American Dream.

Their families have come here for a better life and my students do everything they can to make that possible. My students are the most hard working group of people I've ever met. They come to school early every morning so that I can help them with their other classes. They skip lunch to work on "publishing" our monthly newsletter. They stay after school to tutor one another and even email me in the evenings and on weekends to ask questions about assignments. They dream of being engineers, pilot, architects and businessmen when they grow up, but some of them have become jaded. They don't think that they fit in with society. They come to me to complain about why teachers give them crossword puzzles when they will have to take a regents soon. They complain about the fact that I teach 20 kids in a small office. They feel forgotten and invisible

My Project

Reading this book will provide a lot of academic value. My students are capable of so much more than just doing crossword puzzles. Just like the general education students, my students should be reading novels and critiquing them. They should be engaged in discussions of literary elements and writing essays about how those elements are used to develop a text. My students will be comparing this book to informational texts like JFK's Inaugural Address, Mencken's essay On Being American and MLK's Letter from a Birmingham Jail. The work we are doing in ELA is aligned with what they are learning in history so that in June they have skills to achieve mastery on both regents. These are things that I would be doing now but we don't have adequate materials at our school. Somehow our high school doesn't have appropriate books; we have a bunch of elementary and middle school texts. The high school level books that we do have, we only have 3-7 copies of - not enough to teach a class of 20+.

I requested Invisible Man because I know it'll have a lot of meaning for my students.

I know they'll be able to relate to the narrator as he tries to find his place in a society that continuously ignores him. I know that he'll serve as a motivational figure, encouraging them to continue towards their dreams. Getting this book from donors like you will mean so much to my students because it will also show them they there are people out there who do care about them and see them as capable.
