My Family Is Missing, My Home Invaded: Literature Immersion

My students need a set of the amazing novel "Tomorrow, When the War Began", by John Marsden, to immerse themselves in the experience of a teenager whose town is invaded.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students struggle to reach beyond their own experience and see the world through the eyes of others. They need to learn (through great literature) what it's like to walk in another person's shoes, in another person's life. These novels will allow my students to vicariously experience the dislocation of war.

Learning to love history can change the life path of a student.

Moving beyond dry dates and facts, to a place where historical figures are real people, with real motivation and lives, is a necessity. When my students go on to college, I want them to have the story of the whole world in their heads. My students inspire me every day. They came to us so far behind that they ranked last in the district. Over the last year and a half, they have worked so hard that now we are ahead of the pack. That being said, my students still struggle to relearn basic things, as well as the non-fiction literacy skills they need to be successful. It's very frustrating when my students are unable to answer successfully, not because they don't know the material, but because they don't understand the question. My students also need to be pushed to imagine the world beyond the 10-square miles of northeast Houston where many of them have lived their wholes lives, rarely leaving.

My Project

The novel "Tomorrow, When the War Began" is the amazing story of a group of teenagers in Australia who go on a camping trip in the bush, only to return to a foreign invasion of unnamed troops. Their families and friends have been rounded up and put into camps, and enemy soldiers patrol the town. These teenagers make the choice to engage in guerrilla warfare and take back their homes! This book will provide an amazing opportunity for my students to think critically about the choices that are made during war, as well as leadership, group dynamics, conflict, and a host of other important topics and issues. The characters in the books are very relatable, and, on top of that, since the books are set in Australia, my students will gain insight into another culture! My students and I are so excited at the potential of these books to change our classroom and provide a window into another culture and into the intricacies of war.

Students are often asked to reflect in writing on particular topics and to make connections between the prompt and their own experiences.

My students struggle with this exercise, because their exposure to different stories, cultures, and ways of life is limited. These novels will allow my students to create connections across their various disciplines. They will enjoy the story, and they will have new insights into life as a result.
