Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What if, when you were a kid, you had a beautiful kite but no string to fly it? Or if you had crayons to draw with, but no paper? That's what it's like for my Academic Literacy students. They have access to technology, but no engaging software to help them refine key academic skills.

The students in my Academic Literacy class are in 6th through 8th grade.

They're earnest, hardworking and funny - they just need a little extra support and exposure when it comes to understanding and implementing key academic concepts. Like the rest of their generation, my students are avid consumers of all things digital. They're excited to use computers both in school and in their daily lives. They're always eager to use our classroom computers; however, there's only so much they can do with what we have.

My Project

Our shared classroom is fortunate enough to have 5 Apple iMac computers; however, we don't have any exciting educational software to run on them. Interactive software that embeds key concepts into fun and challenging games will help reinforce what they are learning in their core academic classes. The selected math software will help to demystify concepts like multiplication, equivalence, and conversion. Language software will help them to broaden their vocabularies and understand reading comprehension strategies such as inference and determining the main idea of a passage. The software packages allow for multiple computer licenses, so that each computer in the classroom will be able to run the software and students can select what skill they'd like to strengthen. Allowing students to self-select what subject they would like to work on would only increase their enthusiasm for using the computers.

Interactive software supporting mathematics, language arts, and test-taking skills will help my current and future Academic Literacy students to get the most out of the technology available for them to use in the classroom.
