Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I want my students to see that art is not just stuck in a museum, but all around them and a part of their daily lives. Through creating a block print they will learn about communicating with visual symbols. Turning these prints into buttons will make the "fine arts" attainable and interactive.
I teach at a low income, "at risk" school.
However, the adversities my students face only fuel their passion for life and drive to be something other than a statistic. My students are creative and talented and deserve the chance to have hands on experiences with art supplies and processes that are available in high end art labs. The exposure they have to the visual arts, and potential design careers is often limited to my classroom.
My Project
I want my students to learn how to communicate and analyze a message in visual symbols. Creating a block print is conducive to this goal because it is reusable and lends itself to publishing and speaking to the public. What will bring this project alive and tangible for my students is turning their print into a button. It becomes something they can use outside of the classroom. This fun to wear and share token will give my students a hands on experience with communicating a visual message to the public. It will demonstrate how art is a part of our daily lives. In the years to come, I would like to expand this project and use the block print buttons as art awareness and art fund raisers. My students need the Button Machine and Buttons to create their block print buttons.
Thank you so much for your support.
I know my students will love their buttons and take pride in their art. More importantly, each day they carry that button on them they will be reminded that there are people out there rooting for their success.
