Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you," (Maya Angelou). My first grade students write their own books every day, but soon they will run out of writing materials to tell their stories. Please help them tell their stories!

My school is located in California.

We are a Title I school in a low income community. All our students receive free lunch. Most of my first grade students are Second Language Learners, who are acquiring English as a second language and at the same time are learning all other subject areas in English. My young students deserve to have the basic materials that makes learning interesting and fun. However, due to budget cuts, my school cannot order any more essential materials, such as copy paper and ink for the printers. Without these materials it is more difficult to teach first graders to write.

My Project

My students write two or more non-fiction books each week during Writer's Workshop. The students select the right paper template to write their books, they organize their pages, and staple their own books. Each student book needs between 3 to 5 pages. The students write with stamina and enthusiasm, in part due to the the success they experience when they find paper template that guides them through the different text structures in non-fiction writing. During a daily forty minute writing block, the students participate in a mini-lesson, share with each other, and apply what they learned. Then the students have about twenty minutes to plan, sketch, write, revise, and edit their own stories. As the students write, I conference with students and provide individual and small group assistance. With a donation of copy paper, ink and an electric stapler, I will be able to print writing templates, provide my students with enough writing paper, and let them staple their own books.

My students enjoy writing their own books and they appreciate the independence they have during Writer's Workshop.

The writing templates of different text structures they can select from and the electric stapler will continue to facilitate my students' writing. The copy paper, ink for the classroom printer, and the electric stapler will definitely give my students the necessary tools to facilitate their book writing.
