My Students

Do you remember the first time you were bullied, made fun of, or tried to fit in with the popular crowd, as you experienced a total body transformation thinking it only happened to you? Many children experience this and have no one to turn to for guidance or are embarrassed to ask!

My students attend a public K-6 grade elementary school in Los Angeles,California.

Our classroom is composed of 31, 9-11 year old 5th grade students from low income families. Ninety-four percent of the students are Hispanic, 2% Filipino,1% Asian and 3% Anglo-American.

My Project

Since I only have 1 copy of Chicken Soup For the Soul, I have been reading the stories aloud to my class on a daily basis. My students need a set of 32 of Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul. Ever since day one, my students are hooked on the stories. I asked them if they like listening to them and they responded, "Yes, because the stories talk about things that have happened to me and I'm shy to talk about those things." I've seen a change in the way they treat each other. They are sympathetic with one another by helping and showing empathy when someone is going into a rough situation. We also had a bullying problem and now the students have totally stopped bullying each other and are being respectful to each other. This series is wonderful and I just know they will enjoy having a book of their own to read and enjoy.

They will be prepared to work collaboratively with other members in a multicultural school and work setting.
