School Newspaper Seeks Digital SLR

My journalism staff needs one digital SLR camera to take photographs for the school newspaper.

I have been teaching English at a large, urban high school in Los Angeles for seven years. This is my second year teaching journalism and I love it! The students are really excited about the newspaper and are working hard to make it the best the school has seen in years. This is a school that has been labeled by the government as failing, where a close to 100% Latino student population struggles to overcome life's obstacles and defy society's low expectations of them. We keep getting positive feedback, and the paper keeps getting better. The writing is improving and the students are fundraising for a trip to Columbia for a journalism conference in March. The big shortcoming we have is technology, especially cameras. We have two cheap digital cameras that are slowly breaking and never really took good photos to begin with. Photography is such an integral part of journalism. It grabs the reader's attention and often tells the story better than any text, the proverbial thousand words. I want my students to be able to see the joy of taking photos with a really good camera. Right now we sometimes borrow photos from the yearbook staff, because they have a teacher who has been adviser for a number of years and has been able to scrape together a decent collection of digital SLRs. Their photos look so much better than ours! Please help us buy a new digital SLR. It will make a world of difference to us and will help us to keep the positive momentum going that we have been enjoying with the school paper. This will be something that will last for years and will impact thousands of students through the photos they will see published in the newspaper. Julius Shulman, the great architectural photographer graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1928. He came to visit our class twice, and I couldn't help thinking that perhaps the next one was sitting there taking in his presentation.
