Building a Class Library: Books By Request

My students need 14 books such as "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and " Daniel Bloom AKA Loud Boy" to keep students engaged during independent reading time.

My Students

When my students entered my classroom many of them were reading far below grade level. However, all their hard work has paid off and they have already grown 1.5 years in reading. The problem, however is that as our reading scores increase we need reading books that will capture our imaginations.

I teach 7th grade language arts at an inner-city school in Missouri.

Although my students entered my room with many reading deficiencies, they are the most dedicated and motivated individuals I have ever met. This year they have set huge reading goals and are working diligently to meet those goals. Their goal is to grow two full years in reading. This reading goal will not only help them get back on grade level, but will also put them on a better track in life.

My Project

In order to meet their learning goals, my students participate in an independent reading program where they get to choose a book that they are interested in. They then use this book to practice the skills we learn in class while reading on their own. Once they have completed their book they get to choose another book. This program has been successful so far because the students are offered a choice in what they read. As a result , they become more engaged and motivated to take the time to practice. The problem we are faced with is that as my students reading scores improve, we are quickly running out of independent reading books to meet their needs. The books that we are requesting in this project are books that the students have specifically requested. This way it is guaranteed that the books we receive will actually meet the interests of my students and will be read and loved.

With your help we can help to close the achievement gap for these students.

By supporting my class, you will be helping my students to have resources that would otherwise be impossible for us to obtain. You will be providing my students with the power to take their education into their own hands and help build their passion for reading.
