My Students

Learning to read is difficult, but it is one of the most important keys to success in school and in life! My students are learning to read in their second language, which makes this task even harder. These online whiteboard subscriptions will help my students build a strong foundation in reading.

Over 85% of students at our small, K-8 school receive free/reduced price lunch.

I am the only ELL (English Language Learners) teacher, and most of my students are Liberian, but I also have Ghanaian, Nigerian, Hmong, Latino, and Chinese students. My students are doing their best to overcome their difficult circumstances. Some lived the first years of their lives in refugee camps. Many of their parents work two jobs to keep their families going. Because of this, a lot of my students are being raised by older siblings or are in charge of raising their younger siblings. They lack a strong academic background. Despite this, my students are energetic and happy. They have been so excited in the past to receive materials from DonorsChoose. They are amazed that people who don't know them are willing to give money so they can have the supplies they need.

My Project

I am asking for a year long subscription to the Anchor Comprehension Workshop K-6 interactive whiteboard resources and E-books. I recently had the chance to use these technology resources with a month-long trial. My students loved using them and were very enthusiastic about working on their reading skills in this new way. Our new interactive projector (funded through DonorsChoose) makes it easy for all students to interact with the activities and books. I don't have a set curriculum to use with my students, and I am very limited in my resources. These subscriptions would provide me with resources to teach important comprehension skills to all my students. The E-book subscription would allow my students to access 580 different books that cover all of their reading levels. The books also cover important concepts in math, science, and social studies which would help me build the background knowledge my students need to succeed in their mainstream classes.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.

Reading is one of the most important life skills there is! It is the key to succeeding in school and succeeding in life. Without you, my students would never have access to this kind of technology.
