This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"We are a family on a journey to a place called Wonderful," is the motto of the family portrayed in the newest book by acclaimed author Christopher Paul Curtis, entitled The Mighty Miss Malone. This motto could well be applied to my class during reading workshop when we have great books in our hands.

My students love to read.

Our school is in the poorest community in our state, and our city closed the library due to lack of funding. Having access to books has become a major issue for my students. We simply do not have enough books. We need high quality literature to keep our reading going strong.

My Project

My students are going to learn about the Great Depression through a unit of study on historical fiction. I am requesting a class set of The Mighty Miss Malone, and the audio book. Although it is not the only book they will read during this study, the heroine of the story is their age and has hopes and dreams that my students will identify with. I want them to experience this book by holding a hardcover copy in their hands as we read the novel together.

Your donation will support my students in their development of life long reading habits, and in their endeavor to become strong readers of historical fiction.

Walter Dean Myers recently stated, "Reading is NOT optional," and we want to live up to his words by reading!
