Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our long absent drama program is being revived. Our students are able to apply principles learned in their core subjects to the dramatic performances for our school community. Not only does this process demonstrate mastery of core concepts, but it also enriches learning.

Our middle school students attend our math, science and technology magnet school on a long marginalized, inner city campus.

Intellectually motivated and curious, our students are eager learners who thrive academically, despite our crowded school environment and a high poverty community. Our students are primarily from low-income households and are particularly grateful for the opportunity to participate in our enriching magnet school programs such as the dramatic productions they create in their core subject areas. Our magnet program is relatively young, having been launched less than ten years ago. Due to the ongoing academic success of our students and positive relationships with the families in our community, our magnet program maintains a waiting list of potential students. Many of our former students have continued on to prestigious magnet high schools in our district, and proudly to major colleges and universities in our state and beyond.

My Project

We are requesting an audio mixer for our microphones and powered speakers to which it will be connected. The mixer will let our student audio engineers bring out our actors' voices so our audiences will be able to hear every word from the stage. The enrichment our media arts program provides to our students goes so much further with the right tools and supplies that link classic drama to the challenges and rewards of media in the digital age. However, even in 2012, we have to make do with what we've got. Our stage is part of a Multi-Purpose Room, rather than an auditorium or theater with fixed seating. Our drama space is used for athletics, as a recreational facility, and nearly everything else that requires an indoor space that can handle hundreds of students. Needless to say, without voice amplification, our students cannot be heard on stage. Our audiences will be able to hear and enjoy our student performances.

Enhancing student learning with our revived drama program enables our students to bring academic lessons to life in ways that captivate and stimulate the imagination.

Our drama classes are encompassed by our media arts program, which ties into core subject areas to provide students with an understanding of curricular content embedded in the foundations of media literacy.
