My Students

Music has the power to encourage and inspire. My students (with very few exceptions) have not had any prior music training, but when they sit in front of a keyboard, listen and adhere to instructions, they become engaged in the unwritten challenge and beauty of music!

My students face challenges that extend far beyond the classroom.

Our school is a technical-vocational school, generally preparing students to enter the workforce upon graduation. Many of my students have unstable home lives, and learn from an early age how to fend for themselves. Many of my students are living in group homes, and school is a haven for social interaction. Amidst the difficulties my students may face, they come to school with an energetic and passionate attitude. Their personalities shine in my classroom. I hope to encourage students to express themselves and engage their critical-thinking skills in regards to playing the music they love. Music is an integral part of their lives. It is inspiring, empowering, invigorating and exciting. It is an extremely rewarding experience to watch my students comprehend and figure out how to play a melody they recognize. I feel my class is rewarding and implements problem solving skills.

My Project

My classroom is extremely limited in its resources. I came to Mergenthaler Vocational Technical High School this year and supplied all of the instruments, paid for out of my own pocket. Additional resources of electronic keyboards would be incredibly rewarding, as it would directly provide the students with the supplies they need to learn. My school frankly does not have the funding to supply all of the necessary equipment for learning, and it is a constant balancing act. I often have to assign multiple students to one instrument in order to create a fluidity in my classroom. To be able to have each student assigned to their own instrument would directly help the focus and engagement of the learning process in my classroom.

This is an incredible opportunity to benefit the education of my students and school.

Words cannot describe how amazing and rewarding this kind of donation would be. This donation would benefit each of my students, creating an inspiring atmosphere for learning and knowledge!
