This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you could read a book? How suddenly the world opened up to you? That's what I want my students to feel! Being able to read is the single most important skill a person can possess and I strive to make sure all my students coming out of my classroom have that skill!

My students are awesome!

They are like little sponges soaking up learning! I have a diverse group of students, some are high readers, some are average readers, some are low readers and a few are non-readers. The students attend a Los Angeles Unified School (Victoria Ave) in a low socio-economic area. The struggles my students face daily sometimes can be obstacles to their learning to read. I want to use every resource I can to level the "playing field", in other words, help them to succeed in reading. A listening center will do just that!

My Project

A listening center comes with individual headphones so that a student can privately read and enjoy a book. Students pop in a CD of a great book into the CD player, put on the headphones, pick up the companion book and sit back and enjoy someone reading to them! Non-Readers can listen to the story, follow along with the book and LEARN new vocabulary. Readers can use the Center to reinforce their skills or simply ENJOY listening to a book or story. How will reading change my students' lives for the better? I think it speaks for itself, reading changes your life forever!
