Pop And Match Sounds

My students need a set of phonemic awareness match-ups and a set of pop and match phonics games to help them learn beginning, middle and ending sounds in words.

My Students

Figuring out beginning, middle and ending sounds in words is a necessary skill and consuming part of learning to read in Kindergarten but it is fun once you learn to sound out words and can read!!!

I teach kindergarten in a Northern California Title One school.

I have 25 wonderful students this year. They are eager and engaged learners who come to school with enthusiasm each day. Several of my students are second language learners and many of my students did not have the opportunity to go to preschool. All my students have shown growth in benchmark testing but struggle in a few areas including reading Consonant-Vowel-Consonant words.

My Project

I am asking for Pop and Match phonics games and Phonemic Awareness Match Ups. The Pop and Match game can be played in a center. The students can take turns and pop the cube and then each child will figure out where that letter goes on their card to make a word. We will start with beginning sounds since most of them are confident with their beginning sounds. Then we will move on to ending and middle sounds. These areas are harder for them and the idea of a game to practice is so enticing and engaging to a five and six yea old! The match up game will be a choice activity during our reading block and during centers. The students will have the choice to work not only on beginning, middle and ending sounds but also rhyming words. I can also use these match ups with my second language learners. They can work on sounds as well as using the pictures to expand their English vocabulary.
