A Love for Reading

My students need interesting and engaging books for independent reading time.

My Students

Reading is a window to the world. For my students, it is a window that they have yet to open. My students need these books to begin building a love for reading and to being understanding the world they live in.

The majority of my students come from low-income homes and are considered to be living in poverty.

Most of them are immigrants to this country and have been living here anywhere from a few weeks to 17 years. One of my students has been living in the U.S. since she was a year old. At home the primary language is Spanish. Because the only place she has ever been exposed to English has been school, her whole life she has been considered an English language learner. Currently she is a 10th grader and is reading at the level a 5th grader should be reading. She is currently about 5 years behind. When she is asked why she doesn't like to read her answer always is "it's boring." One of my 11th graders has been living here for only a year. In the short time that she has been in my class she has jumped from reading about where a 4th grader should be to reading at almost the 7th grade.

My Project

Currently, my classroom library only has about 20 books. During independent reading time students are often fighting to pick the "good" books. I am requesting 23 books to add to my classroom library so that students will have more options during independent reading. By the end of this year my hope is that all of my students will appreciate the wonders that reading can bring into their lives. Our class goal is that every students will gain 5 years in reading. Some of my students are on the right path but many are not. Gaining 5 years of reading will mean that my students will be reading on grade level. Not making that goal has the potential to have negative effects for the rest of their lives.

If my students do not have the resources to begin appreciating books and reading the consequences my be devastating.

States across our nation use 3rd grade reading scores to predict how many prisons they need to build. The thought that some of my students have already been flagged as someone who could end up in prison is heartbreaking. But I know that this can be changed. I know that books and reading have the power to be life-changing. You can help me make that change happen.
