Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Studies show that the amount of books in a home is linked to future student success in school. I surveyed my students and was saddened by the results. Only four of my students expressed having sufficient books. The rest stated they had less than ten books in their home.

Our school is surrounded by drugs and gang-related activity.

My students seek refuge in the nurturing environment our entire staff strives to offer. Over 50% of our students come from homes where multiple families are forced to share tight living quarters. Unfortunately, a majority of our students see our school breakfasts and lunches as a blessing and the only warm meals of the day.

My Project

My students have shared an interest in learning about important people who have made major contributions to our current lifestyles. They have also inquired about distant lands and important landmarks. I have handpicked a few dozen nonfiction books that will allow my students to seek out answers to their inquiries. These books include biographies like Albert Einstein, Amelia Earhart, My Life with Chimpanzees and Stealing Home: The Story of Jackie Robinson. My classroom currently has a book checkout system in place therefore, mainstreaming the new books would be a breeze.

Our school is currently without a librarian and our classroom is in a desperate need of books.

My students and I are anticipating the funding of this project. The sooner this project gets funded the less students that would be adversely affected by insufficient literature. Please help.
