My students need a new way to organize and access their writing binders and materials to help feed their passion for writing.

My Students

All writers, young and old, need to have access to the proper writing materials and a way to organize their written work. The young writers in my classroom are inspired each to to be authors, now they just need a better system for accessing and organizing their materials.

My classroom is a Kindergarten and First grade multi-age classroom filled with diverse learners and a high English as a Second Language population.

They are passionate writers and highly creative in many ways. They are very proud authors, always taking great pride in the wonderful stories they write during our regular writer's workshop. Many of the students in my class are such passionate writers that choose to write during our daily choice time when they could be playing games instead. This love for writing is not uncommon with young children as they are taught to use REAL authors as mentors and tell stories like their favorite authors. You like Tome DePaola's story "The Art Lesson"? Well, you can write a story about something you love to do too! You like Doreen Cronin's story "Click Clack Moo, Cows that Type"? Well, you can write a story about animals doing something silly too!

My Project

I strive to create a classroom that is organized and accessible for all my students. This maximizes learning time and allows me to spend more time working with students on the task at hand, in this case writing, and less time helping locate materials. The furniture I'm requesting will help my young students access and organize our writing materials more effectively and independently. The table top writing center will be used to help student access blank writing papers and booklets as well as special pencils for writing and illustrating. The corner binder shelf will be used for each student's individual writing binder to be stored when they are not in use. The current system we have in messy and ineffective which sadly sometimes results in lost writing projects that students have worked so hard on.
