Teaching Government in the 21st Century: Student Video Blogs

My students need these 4 camcorders and memory cards to be able to produce video blogs about the issues we study in the US Government and Economics courses.

My Students

Help us jump into the 21st Century! Our students are hungry for technology based learning but lack the tools to fully get there!

Our students are a very diverse group, coming from low socio-economic backgrounds.... students lack the funds to stay up with recent technology and innovations in learning.

Our students attend a math/science focus college preparatory school with a very rigorous curriculum. Overall our students are good and want to learn, many hoping to be the first in their family to attend college.

My Project

Students will use these resources for a variety of assignments/projects. The digital video cameras will allow multimedia projects to be created and the larger memory cards will help students surpass time and quality limitations. Primarily, I am hoping to use them to have students create video blogs in which they will discuss key issues discussed in our Economics and Government courses. I also can see using these resources to make campaign videos in Government and Good vs. Bad Economic Decisions to name a few other potential assignments. Aside from learning the course content, it is my hope students will become more adept at using technology and editing/modifying video/audio content. Overall I feel that having access to this type of technology will help them in preparing for college and the work world by realizing different ways to communicate ideas/thoughts and how to properly control what the message looks like.

I feel these resources will make a big difference in allowing our students to express themselves in a new way, using technology as tool in their learning, preparing them for college and the work world.

I also feel this could be very helpful in getting our ELL (English Language Learner) students more involved... they often struggle with written expression so being able to verbalize in a video blog and seeing themselves speak could be very helpful in their language development.
