Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Put music back into the classroom. I would like to have my students learn to play the recorder. In doing so, they will not only make music but, as research proves, become better in math.
My students attend a Title 1 school in which all students receive free lunches.
Many students struggle to have the basic educational supplies in order to complete homework. Owning an instrument and taking lessons to learn to play that instrument are not possibilities for most of my students due to costs. In addition, education in general is facing huge budget cuts. Something as simple as musical recorders for students is not feasible through our school's budget.
My Project
Through providing my students an opportunity to learn to play their very own musical recorder, I will give them an experience they most likely never would get in elementary school. Students are most motivated in learning something different than reading and math. Yet through learning to play a recorder, students will learn to read musical notes and count beats. Students will learn patterns and repeating patterns in music. This skill of knowing and recognizing patterns is an important skill in math as well as life. Playing the recorders will help my students learn this skill and other skills in a fun way. After all, some of the best memories are of doing fun things.
My students will have a sense of pride when they are able to play their first song.
Once they know they can play a tune, they will have more confidence to try to do things they never thought about, thus learn new things they might have never learned due to a lack of confidence.
