Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? My students have just discovered some of the popular authors in young adult literature such as Kate DiCamillo and Roald Dahl. They need supplies to keep discussing what they are reading in literature circles.

My students are high achieving fourth graders in an urban school district.

Several students are identified as gifted. They are motivated to learn and love to read! Their hunger to learn and discover is contagious. They especially love to read books by Kate DiCamillo and to meet in small groups to discuss the characters and plot. Our school district has made some drastic program cuts due to lack of funding and the children are missing out on lots of things that their peers in more affluent districts get to experience every day.

My Project

My students have discovered a love of reading though the implementation of literature circles. The first step is for students to choose a book from several choices, usually by the same author or with the same theme. They form small groups based on their choices and then read the books, meeting regularly to discuss what they love and find confusing about the chapters they just read. The groups are student led and the students take turns completing different tasks to keep the conversation flowing. After each group finishes, the students present the book to the rest of class. This helps them to decide what they want to read next. The result is a student book club in which the students motivate and support each other while building their reading skills.

The difference in the students' attitudes about reading when they are reading books they chose to read, that their friends have recommended, is remarkable!

My students love reading these books; they beg to read ahead and talk about what they are reading at lunch and recess. I want to provide them with more books by the authors they love. This project will allow me to continue to inspire life long readers for years to come.
