Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." Dr. Seuss.

My students live in what is known as a "High poverty, high crime rate" area, yet they come to school everyday eager to learn.

They have amazing ideas that should be embraced and given life, however they are hindered by their low socioeconomic neighborhood. They often do not sit with someone at home to read a book, nor have the materials to pop in a read along CD and listen to it. When they come to school, they are only provided with certain read along CDs that they end up memorizing and not fully understanding the impact reading has on them. Having a constant review of reading, language, and listening skills will sharpen their minds and build up their strategies when it comes to learning.

My Project

In school, we are on a fast pace plan because we have a combo 1st and 2nd grade class. We have implemented groups and it would be beneficial for my students to sit and listen to a book while they follow along. A welcomed respite as opposed to the rest of the day. My wonderful students will be able to sit, look and follow along while they are listening to a story teller bring the book to life, someone who can expand their imaginations beyond what is written on the text and detailed by the pictures. Sitting down and going over grade level standards on a daily basis with their peers, will allow them to fully master what they need to learn. Using the Daily Mathematics and Language review will improve their overall scores when testing comes around. They will be able to go back and remember that they went over a specific way to solve a problem or fix a sentence because they had daily reviews.

Having these books in class will help them understand words that are not so readily spoken.

They will learn different ways to solve a problem or fix a sentence. They will develop their vocabulary skills, mathematical skills and more importantly, they will develop a love for all these subjects.
