Mushing through the Curriculum

My students need up-to-date, technological materials to study the Iditarod Dog Sled Race.

My Students

Have you ever followed the thrilling Iditarod Dog Sled Race? My urban fifth graders are totally engaged and excited while studying the Iditarod Dog Sled Race. While being enthused, they are mastering the skills required for the standards in fifth grade.

My students are low-income, urban fifth graders.

They are most actively engaged when I can provide hands-on, technologically based projects for them to immerse themselves in. These materials will allow me to teach a unit that is the most integrative, engaging one that I teach. It is also the one I personally have the most passion for. It provides much excitement in the learning process for them, links them to persons, activities, and areas far beyond the state of Indiana. They practice the skills they are learning such as writing a paragraph describing the characteristics a musher would need, figuring out the mileages between checkpoints, finding the mean temperatures in Nome, Alaska, correcting grammatical mistakes in sentences about the Iditarod, and discovering the history of the Iditarod Trail.

My Project

I have taught the Iditarod Dog Sled Race for almost fifteen years. When students return to visit, they still talk about when they studied the Iditarod and know which musher they predicted would win. This unit is phenomenal at being integrated into the current curriculum while engaging students. However, the resources I am using are still entirely paper and pencil. These curriculum materials use the technology now available so my students will be even MORE engaged! The vinyl trail map will provide opportunity for many skills - geography, history, math. To be able to track the mushers and get video demand will be awesome - we have 15 laptops so the students can track their mushers. The power point presentations will be an exciting way to present the curriculum in the classroom. This provides an opportunity for students to practice the skills they have learned in exciting, relevant, engaging lessons.

This project widens the perspective of my students greatly.

It takes them from their urban environment to the frigid environment of Alaska. It provides opportunity to discover the traits that both the human and canine athletes have, which are the same ones that will be definitive in their own lives. It provides an opportunity to bring relevance to their learning, providing practical opportunities to use their skills. It brings technology into the classroom. We need your support!
