My Students

Help my kindergarteners go "fishy" for reading this summer! As you know, students lose valuable information over the summer months. With the Fish-tastic Reading Tank, I hope to keep my kindergarteners motivated and engaged in reading all summer long.

My kindergarten students attend a small rural school district in PA.

They needed remediation in reading this year and have come a long way in letter knowledge, phonemic awareness and early reading skills. They are at the beginning stages of reading and are laughing and enjoying it as they progress.

My Project

These materials will be used for a "Fish-tastic Reading Tank" summer program. This program will engage parents in the reading process with their child and help encourage their child to read this summer with this fun fish tank. The students will take care of their fish by feeding it titles of books they have read this summer. The crayons will help them keep track of the days they read on their monthly reading logs and the stickers will be added as "fish friends" each time they choose to read instead of watch T.V. By providing books inside the fish tank, I hope to start the children off on a good "fin" and interest them in some more books and learning about more things. My students need 1 fiction and 1 nonfiction book to read over summer. They need a tank, crayons, a fish to take care of, & fish themed treats and stickers for motivation.

This project is critical for the kindergartners to keep up the progress they have made this year and carry it into 1st grade.

I used a similar project last summer and the kindergarteners that participated came back to school ready to jump back into reading and maintained the reading skills they learned the previous year. It is essential that these students continue to use these skills and build upon them over summer.
