This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What words can get a 5th grade class cheering to the top of their lungs? Justin Bieber! Beyonce! Jonas Brothers! Hannah Montana! There is simply no need to try and deny the fact that today's students are totally immersed into pop culture, so as an effective teacher, I'll embrace the idea with books!

My students face so many challenges, but they realize that education is the vehicle to drive them towards a more promising future.

With so many issues, it is my mission as their educator to take them away and rescue them from their pressing worries through the joys of meaningful experiences and exposure to what life has to offer. Our school is 100% poverty stricken; with only one other in the state of South Carolina. We don't take this rank as an excuse to have a pity party, but rather as a means of motivation. We strive to plant seeds of hope and reassure the students that education is the key that unlocks the doors of opportunity and future success. By understanding that there is more to life than what meets the eye, it is my belief that my students will do what it takes to beat the odds, defy the statistics and embrace the world of education and all it has to offer.

My Project

This year my fifth grade team is departmentalizing, meaning that each of us will take one specific subject to teach. I jumped for the opportunity to teach reading! Once the task was given, I quickly began to transform my room into a reading oasis. As I began to organize my books, I immediately realized that the majority of my book selections were "seasoned" and I did not have any current books that addressed the ever growing craze of pop-culture. I have only been able to do so much, but there still are needs. I pray that you find in your heart to help.

Please help me add some excitement to our class's reading center with the purchase of a diverse selection of pop-culture books.

Students have to be interested in what they are reading. As a result of the students' seasonal book interest inventories, I know that this book selection will be a huge hit! Thank you for your assistance in making this hope a reality.
