My Students

While most public schools are cutting the arts, we are integrating the arts into all areas of the curriculum in this first year charter school. Students stay longer, but they have an hour and a half of arts a day. As much as the arts helps in our school, we would like more hands-on manipulatives.

My students are bright and eager 3rd graders attending a fine arts charter school and we live in in Florida.

Students have come from all different schooling to attend this school: public, private,and homeschooling. They enjoy working on projects and stay focused by working with manipulatives.

My Project

I am requesting 18 Geoboards, 18 clocks, and thermometers for my students. My students loved learning about geometry and 2D shapes, but they struggled to try and draw them on paper because they couldn't physically 'get' the shape. With the geoboards, students will be able to actually see the differences between a rhombus and a trapezoid themselves. The student clocks will allow my students to be able to manipulate the hands themselves to form the time. It will also be easier for them to see the minutes and to be able to understand the half and quarter hour easier. The thermometers will help in Science when we would like to take the temperature of liquids. They will be able to see the red dye vary between the different temperatures. They will also be able to read the exact temperature in F or C.

3rd grade is the first time students learn about 2D shapes and I want them to understand them for years to come. I believe Geoboards will help solidify this understanding. The same is true with the clocks. So many people rely on digital clocks to tell time. I want to be confident when I send my students to the next grade that they know how to tell time properly. All of the items I am requesting are real world applicable.
