This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Mathematics achievement is an annual struggle in the US. Every year as test requirements become increasingly strict, more and more children seem to fall into deficient scoring areas. At the core of the issue is number sense. My first graders are just beginning their journey into the world of math.

Many of my students come from low-income households and their parents are very helpful and supportive, however, many still enter school with a limited understanding of numbers and how they work.

As with most schools struggling with the constraints of NCLB, we are looking into areas of need and number sense seems to come up at every turn. My students need more exposure to numbers and number concepts to see how they are related and to become more comfortable using them in day to day math.

My Project

The centers I have selected will help my students because they are very targeted and specific to skills that we teach throughout the year. The games are simple enough that students can complete them independently in centers and varied enough that they can practice different skills over time. These centers also come with enough materials to create small groups for targeted practice with groups of students who need reinforcement.

As an educator I love using centers to give students independent time to practice skills in a setting that goes beyond paper and pencil.

These centers will offer my students the chance to practice skills that they will need throughout first grade and create building blocks in mathematics for the grades to come.
