Motivating Middle School Readers

My students need 25 quality, age-appropriate magazine subscriptions to motivate and engage middle-schoolers in reading! I will use the same set with different groups of students.

My Students

I teach 100 6th graders daily in the area of language arts. Middle school is a time of great change for these students as they acclimate to many teachers, varying schedules, and greater independence. Students need engaging, motivating reading material to ensure reading doesn't get left behind!

Most of my students come from a rural Virginia background of farming, hunting, fishing, and four-wheeling as primary activities.

Textbook reading will not catch the attention of most of these students and instead has a detrimental effect. I have been able to motivate students through read aloud activities that help them see the world through a lens different than their own.

My Project

Each day I have one block that rotates every month or so between struggling readers and very accomplished readers. Either group could greatly benefit from engaging material to perform through readers theater to improve fluency and comprehension in a fun way.

In the past I have done different types of readers theater with my own limited materials, and students of all abilities have responded, "That was fun!

What are we going to do next?" Unfortunately, I haven't had other materials to move onto and to keep the learning and engagement fresh. I hope these timely READ magazines, which have been recommended to me by other teachers, will fill that gap.
