My Students

We would love to listen to and read along with recorded stories at our listening center area. All we need is a CD/cassette player and four wireless headsets and our listening center will be up and running.

This class of thirty-one first graders love reading but most do not have access to books at home.

Many of the students come from homes where there are no extra funds to purchase books for building an at home collection. Making the most of every opportunity to read at school is a necessity for most of the students if they are going to accelerate their progress in reading and comprehension. This class is one of five and a half first grade classrooms at a high needs school in the San Francisco Bay Area. Seventeen of the students in this classroom are English language learners coming from homes where exposure to English occurs only when at school.

My Project

With the donation of a CD/cassette player and wireless headsets students will be able to listen to and read along with stories that are frequently too difficult for beginning readers to tackle on their own. The vocabulary in picture books is usually beyond the readability of most first graders and especially of the English language learner students. While the teacher is working with small reading groups, students who are not working directly with the teacher will be able to rotate through four independent learning centers, with the listening center being one of them. Students will receive instruction on identifying the beginning, middle and end of a story, characters, plots and setting and record their findings after listening to each story selection. The book selections will include fiction and non-fiction titles and will be accessible to all students through the listening center.

With your generous donation toward the purchase of the CD/cassette player and wireless headsets, the students in this first grade classroom will have access to three to four more read aloud stories each week than they currently have available to them.

This listening center will provide daily opportunities for purposeful centers that provide differentiated instruction with a focus on teaching the essential standards needed in order to be academically successful in first grade and years to come.
