Yoga is not just for adults! Yoga is a wonderful way for students to calm their bodies and minds. It's a great way to start and end the day and to energize the class in the middle of the day! With child obesity a national issue, I want to expose my students early on to fun ways they can exercise!
My students are a part of the prekindergarten program in a science and technology school in a city district of New York.
The school is located in the inner-city and many of the students come from high poverty homes. The school serves grades pre-K to 5. The students needs fun and engaging activities to foster their love of learning at a young age. Many of them may not have access to these experiences at home so I want to provide that for them in the classroom.
My Project
With a class set of yoga mats, we can practice yoga in our classroom. Physical education time has been cut due to the budget and physical education time now has to integrated into classroom time. With a lack of materials and space, it has been difficult to get our daily movement time in which is especially important for young students who need to practice gross motor skills. Yoga is a great way for them to work on these skills as well as to relax their minds to be focused for the rest of the day! Students will learn yoga poses they can do in any space and it will help them to relieve stress and work on their breathing and posture too!
Childhood obesity is a nationwide dilemma and one that we can combat early on by promoting the fun and importance of physical activity in daily life.
I have been starting to teach yoga to my students, but yoga mats would enhance our practice and make it more comfortable for the students. They will leave prek not only with their alphabet and numbers, but also with the understanding of yoga!
