Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you know or remember what it feels like to be in a new situation or not understand what was happening around you? Do you remember what it feels like to just sit and listen to a lecture all day? For many, such experiences are filled with anxiety or boredom.

This is the challenge that faces my kindergarten children, many who are learning vigorous academics as well as a new language at the same time.

My students are an excited bunch of typical five year olds. They work hard all day and try their best to learn hard concepts. Our school is a charter school who is committed to making sure they have what they need to succeed in college and beyond. We are teaching them values to carry with them as well as how to learn independently in learning centers. We take many standardized assessments as well.

My Project

Having a camcorder in class will allow all students access to understanding material in a new and creative manner. We will be able to video tape skits demonstrating values and use them for role plays and critiques, instead of just talking about it. Centers, routines, and "good and bad choices" will also be filmed and discussed, giving all language learners a visual for what the teacher is trying to teach. I like to call these "airplane movies." A simple snippet which shows and gives language to concepts we want to teach.

This camcorder will help all my children learn and will also reach out to the larger community of out school's kids.

Our skits and role plays can be shared at our weekly school wide assembly, inspiring and teaching others. Please consider donating the camcorder to our classroom. Thank you!
