My Students

Have you ever read something that touched your heart so tremendously? "If I accept you as you are, I will make you worse, however, If I treat you as though you are what you are capable of becoming, I help you become that." (author unknown)

My Kindergarten students come from an impoverished community of single parent families, foreclosed homes and high unemployment.

Parental involvement at home is scarce. However, when I look at my students I see greatness of what they are capable of becoming and breaking a cycle of poverty. My students love to talk and play, but most of all they love to learn. They possess such great aspirations of being able to achieve anything that they want to be. Our public school lacks the resources and personnel to help my students become independent readers.

My Project

A foundation for reading must be built in the primary grades starting with Kindergarten. The Leapster would aide students in individual classroom work and cooperative learning. Everything the students need will be right at their fingertips. The Leapster will give students the opportunity to reflect higher order thinking skills, make judgments about what they read and explain why. My students will be able to visualize while reading text to understand the story and help make reading more enjoyable.
