My Students

I remember when I first learned that there was more to the world than the places I have visited. Those first experiences with other faraway countries and frigid tundras made me want to know more about my world and the landforms were a part of it.

I teach a 2nd grade class of students in a portable outside of an overcrowded (brand new) elementary school.

We have 10 teachers on the grade level and each teacher has about 20 students. Some of my students come to me, barely able to write their name, while others are able to read an write well above grade level.

My Project

The materials I am requesting are simple, but will lead students to construct their own models of the United States of America as well as the rest of the World. My former students have always loved the "creative" side of map making where we use shapes to describe the continents and then sketch them out on a blank sheet of paper. (Sometimes they have the most creative ways to describe the shapes of things... Did you know that South America looks like a "melting ice cream cone"?) Using these molds (and the accompanying recipe for the paste, my students can create a map and then paint it. These maps can be used for demonstrations to their parents as well as other students in the school. The students can proudly say "I did that!".

I would love to introduce the concept of mapping and then take it to the "next level" with these hands-on materials that make learning more "fun" to a 7 or 8 year old.

The journals that I am asking for are a way to document their learning and they can use them as a part of their display and presentation to other students in the school.
