Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Children say, "Yummy in my tummy!" when they love what they eat. And when they don't, they say, "Yuk!" In this afterschool club, children will learn about what foods they need to eat to be healthy. They will learn that healthy food is "Yummy for my tummy." They will prepare easy-to-make and delicious meals.

Our elementary school is located in South Central Los Angeles.

This project is for the Yummy For My Tummy afterschool club. It is multiage and includes Kindergarten to 5th grades. It gives the 4th and 5th graders an opportunity to be role models and develop their leadership skills. According to The California Endowment, 31% of adolescents aged 12- to 17-years-old, and one-in-three California children aged 9- to 11-years-old are at risk of becoming or are already overweight. The childhood obesity rates continue to grow each year. Those who are most affected are Latino boys and African American girls of low socioeconomic families. These groups match the student demographics at our school. A combination of poor diet and lack of physical activity has caused these children to be at greater risk for heart disease, diabetes and obesity. Teaching children about nutrition is important not just for their own lives, but also for our society. Our program will teach children about poor diets and healthy diets.

My Project

Children love to cook. They love to eat---sometimes. As we know, many children are picky eaters. Our district has changed and improved the school menu. Yet, there are many children who are still not eating healthy food at school. It’s often because they don’t know what the healthy food is. I have taught my own students how to eat the Pad Thai or the beef stew with broccoli. I tell them the ingredients, and I eat it in front of them. They understand and are inspired to try it. This program will use the recipes from the school cafeteria to prepare easy meals. Children will learn what the ingredients are in their healthier school lunches, learn how to prepare them, and taste them, all in a 30-minute cooking demonstration. My students need a blender, toaster/pizza oven, electric skillet, and other cooking equipment to learn about healthy eating. We need cooking supplies to prepare meals such as the Pad Thai or the eggs and hash browns. Yes, even something simple and nutritious such as eggs is not being selected as the meal of choice by the children. This program will be 4-7 weeks long so that as many students can participate in the remaining five months

We need your help to inspire children to eat their nutritious school lunch.

Please support us so that we have the supplies we need to prepare delicious meals. Please support us so that children learn about eating healthy and develop healthy habits as young as 5-years-old. When children learn about eating healthy, they can inspire their whole family to eat healthier. They grow up eating healthier foods and learn about how to have a healthy lifestyle. This program can inspire our whole school district.
