My Students

Titles. Cutlines. Bylines. For my students, these were all new terms. They had never read nonfiction articles before.

I teach sixth-graders at a college preparatory academy in Missouri.

My sixth-graders are part of the inaugural class at this new charter school. In six years, they will be the first graduating class! Our scholars show grit every day. They recently completed a progress test and are showing amazing growth in reading and math. These students deserve the best so we can put them on an even faster track to college!

My Project

When I first realized that my students had been given little experience with "real-life" nonfiction texts, I printed articles off the Internet. I had to search high and low for articles that were appropriate for their reading level, but were also authentic. I didn't want them to look like textbooks, but I didn't want them to be completely foreign or boring to the scholars, either. While I did my best with these articles, I know the scholars need to put their hands on a real magazine! I learned about the Scholastic News magazine at a recent conference. It is perfect for my students' needs! It is at their reading level, but it still looks like a "real" news magazine.

By teaching my students nonfiction reading skills through this magazine, I could prepare them for a lifetime of "real-life" nonfiction reading.

Students must know how to pick up a news magazine or newspaper if they are ever going to be involved citizens. I am trying to help my students grow into well-informed community advocates. Teaching my students how to read this magazine will put them on the path to a lifetime of community and world awareness and action!
