My Students

This year, my yearbook students received a new camera from wonderful donors via donorschoose.org. As we have put together this year's book, we quickly realized that our new camera, while high-quality and professional, cannot capture certain events that have to be shot from a distance.

My yearbook students are a dedicated bunch of journalists-in-the-making at a small university town in Florida.

They strive to tell the story of the whole high school, not just the jocks and cheerleaders (a popular misconception is that yearbooks are mainly for those kinds of kids). The more coverage we can get, the better. I love how my students will go out of their way to tell the story of another interesting student who has a story to tell but might otherwise fall through the cracks.

My Project

There are some things, however, we just can't photograph well with our current camera's lens. Anything at a distance, whether it's our lacrosse team on the field or the marching band, is difficult to capture well. We need a telephoto lens to show the expressions of our students while they pour their hearts and souls into their activities.

A telephoto lens will help us create a lasting book of photographs that will more accurately tell the story of the school.

A new lens will be another tool my students can use to hone their journalism skills. Some of my students will use what they've learned in college and career. But without the chance to try, they may not ever realize their potential.
