This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each day I face the challenge of gaining the active attention of over 120 middle school students. My goal is to meet this challenge by teaching science through inquiry-based activities that allow students to positively interact with each other, hands-on materials, and the curriculum.

Every time a hands-on activity is planned in science class, my students walk in and their faces light up with excitement and anticipation.

They often say, "Are we going to be able to do that today?” The majority of students at our school come from families living in poverty. My students and their families have limited resources at home to help supplement their education. School is my students’ primary opportunity to engage with content and materials they would not otherwise access. But with the catastrophic budget cuts in California public education, teachers also now have limited resources to supplement the students’ education at school. Our school is full of dedicated staff members who go above and beyond because they know the students deserve all and more than we can give.

My Project

The simple toy cars requested in this grant will provide multiple opportunities for the students to engage in inquiry-based learning. Understanding forces and motion is often challenging for eighth grade students. With the use of hands-on activities, students can build foundational experiences that grow their knowledge and keep them wanting to ask more questions and finding more answers. The cars will be used in a variety of investigations involving force and speed. We will run the cars down ramps to test the relationships between force, mass, and speed. The students will manipulate the angle of the ramp and mass of the car in order to investigate multiple concepts. Although the materials and investigations above appear simple, they will help the students gain a wealth of information while also allowing them to have fun learning together.

The materials are a key component of successful inquiry-based learning.

It is through these mostly student directed investigations that students "do" the learning and generate experiences that lay the foundation for higher levels of thinking and learning. Most importantly, it is because of these activities that students are excited to come to school and anticipate walking into class.
